For Emergency Cricothyrotomy
For Emergency Cricothyrotomy
Developed for Burtron Healthcare
The Burtron Cricothyrotomy Kit is composed of a special scalpel with a retractable blade and a bougie channel, a bougie and an endotracheal tube. The kit will be on hand in Emergency Rooms and ambulances for performing emergency cricothyrotomy.
The kit is designed to simplify the cricothyrotomy procedure. Once the cricothyroid membrane is incised, the opening is maintained with the device while the bougie is inserted into the airway, thereby eliminating the need for a finger to maintain the cricothyroid membrane opening.
Around 0.9 % of intubation attempts will end up requiring cricothyrotomy. In Canada alone, it is estimated that there would be 2,161,320 intubations per year, and 19,541 cricothyrotomies performed every year, and the Burtron Kit is predicted to address this market.
Koven first worked with Burtron Healthcare from early ideation through to Design Input Specification development.
Koven further assisted Burtron Healthcare with 3D CAD modeling, functional prototyping, and bench testing. This work enabled Burtron Healthcare to perform usability testing, to complete an FDA pre-sub meeting and to support their fundraising objectives.
